Enhancing Mont Tremblant: Infrastructure Upgrades for the FIS Women’s Alpine Ski World Cup

Mont Tremblant experience

Mont Tremblant is gearing up for an exciting winter season as it prepares to host the FIS Women’s Alpine Ski World Cup on December 2 and 3, 2023. This prestigious event has prompted significant infrastructure improvements on the Flying Mile slope, ensuring optimal conditions for both athletes and spectators. The enhancements focus on doubling the snowmaking capacity along the entire trail, including the Johannsen section, to provide consistent snow coverage from top to bottom. This ambitious project is a testament to Tremblant’s commitment to delivering world-class skiing experiences.

Central to these efforts is the replacement of the 12-inch water and 10-inch air main pipes on the Johannsen pitch, which now connect seamlessly with existing pipelines on the Beauvallon Bas trail. Additionally, new conduits equipped with fibre-optic cables have been installed to meet FIS standards for media telecommunications and timing infrastructure. The installation of bases for six new double snowmaking guns and twelve permanent cannons on the Johannsen slope further underscores the scale of this operation.

In the upper and mid-Flying Mile sections, two new lines have been added to allow snowmaking from both sides of the trail. This strategic enhancement will enable the snowmaking team to cover the Flying Mile much earlier in the season, optimizing water and energy efficiency. In total, 79 new cannons have been installed on 30-foot masts, ensuring better reach and hang time for snow coverage.

What Makes This Experience Special

The infrastructure upgrades at Mont Tremblant are not just about meeting the demands of a world-class event; they represent a significant investment in the mountain’s long-term appeal. The new snowmaking installations are identical to the state-of-the-art cannons found on the Bière-en-Bas Algonquin and P’tit Bonheur trails, allowing for snowmaking at warmer temperatures and increased coverage. This $2,777,428 investment by Tremblant and Alterra Mountain Company underscores a commitment to continuous improvement of mountain infrastructure for major events and everyday skiing enjoyment.

While the upgrades are exciting, they come with some changes to the landscape. The Flying Mile Hut, a historic building, will be dismantled to make way for the starting platform and temporary structures required by FIS and Alpine Canada. In its place, a new building at the summit, located just north of the Flying Mile chairlift terminal, will house the main valve and distribution network for local snowmaking systems in an underground bunker. The main floor will serve as a satellite office for the Tremblant Ski Patrol, ensuring rapid deployment during the race event and additional support during regular winter operations.
